POEM SERIES #3
1
Behind bars we stood
I and my lover, with the other hoods
Don’t be mistaken, we weren’t thieves
Someone deceived us and we believed
2
The entire country was in jeopardy
I was forced to hide in my study
Day after day and night after night
Waiting hopefully for a better sight
3
Until the day the guards took us to the fields
Ten soldiers all lined up with guns and shields
This was it, the end of it all
I, filled with trepidation and hope so small
4
I was first to be shoot and my lover, runner-up
My lover begging endlessly for my sake while I sobbed
Alas! It was time to face the gun
Nowhere to hide, nowhere to run
5
As I stood blindfolded, my arms open wide
I heard my lover struggling to break free near my side
My life sliding on thin ice about to crack
Each second like long years as I waited for the impact
6
Finally, the trigger was pulled and I waited for the brunt
There was a loud scream
One second, two, three, four had passed
I was confused was I dead at last?
7
I removed the blindfolds which left a sore
My lover was not with the guards anymore
I looked down and to my greatest surprise
There my lover beneath me with closed eyes
